Stephen is a South Dakota artist who typically paints rural and urban landscapes on location outdoors in the open air or in his studio downtown in Sioux Falls. A variety of South Dakota landmarks and weather conditions are an inspiration for him to sketch, draw and paint as often as possible. His art is characterized by an impressionist style with broad brush strokes, high contrast and brighter colors. Using his plein air works for reference, larger paintings are produced in his studio with oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastel mediums.

In addition to private collections, Steve’s work can be found in public collections of Hospitals and State Office buildings and has been shown at various museum venues around the state. His photographs, sketches and paintings from military service as a combat artist for the US Army in Vietnam are included in the Army Art Collection at the Center for Military History.
