The genesis behind my painting "Upstream" was a desire to paint one of my favorite subjects, gummy candy, in this case, Swedish Fish, juxtaposed with a landscape/seascape painting of some sort. After playing around with a few different ideas, I decided on Frederic Church's iconic masterpiece, "Niagara Falls". I liked the idea of the "fish" appearing to swim upstream with Church's depiction of the falls as the background.

In this time of COVID, with lockdowns and shelter in place, it just felt nice to get back to nature, albeit in a painting, while also trying to add a little humor and light-heartedness. After all, what is more American than Niagara Falls.
