When I painted this self-portrait in March, the Coronavirus was spreading and taking hold in the United States. The mad rush for masks, hand sanitizer, and even toilet paper began. The general anxiety over the virus is expressed through the chaotic brushwork of the background while my eyes reflect the troubled emotional state. In the new fashion, masks supplant make-up, and one accessorizes with toilet paper. Like the best fad, everybody wants them and they fly off the shelves. The new fashion is the new chic.
