The biggest joy I get from being a plein air painter is the opportunity to travel around the U.S. and other countries, meeting new people and painting new scenes. In January of 2020, I traveled to Cuba with 11 other artists to paint and connect with the Cuban people. It was a trip of a lifetime. I loved the people, the music, the sunshine and the colors.

"Somos Cuba" is a painting from one dining adventure we had at a privately owned "paladar" (restaurant). Through a dilapidated entry, up broken stone stairs, we ate at one of three tables while the chef cooked a delicious dinner right in front of us. I never would have dreamed this would be my last painting trip for a while.

The "theme" of COVID-19 is that we are "all in this together." While the whole world is experiencing this pandemic "together," we are all isolated. One country from another, one town from another, and one family from another. I long for "normal." I long for a time when I can join a friend for tea, meet our newly born grandson, and plan another plein air adventure discovering new friends and new places.
