We have been living in a time of isolation. For some of us, that is a major change from how we typically live our lives. For others, the rhythm of life is more or less unaltered. I saw this elderly woman dining alone when in Santa Fe a couple of years ago. I was so struck by her dignity and the sense that she was very comfortable being alone. Her solitary, reserved comportment contrasted with the outdoor scene, where the plaza was dressed up for the annual Fiesta, and it was this contrast that compelled me to paint the scene.
