I was juried into a southwest regional plein air competition which was to take place during an entire week in May. The location happened to be my home town of Galveston. Unfortunately, the pandemic occurred with the subsequent lockdown and cancellation of the show. At about that time of year (late April to early May), these yellow wildflower blossoms just exploded at the old Galveston City Cemetery. The cemetery has been in existence since the middle of the 1800s, consequently it has many old and weathered statuary and crypts. The annual exhibition of spring renewal as presented by the wildflowers juxtaposed amongst the graves and decaying monuments of the cemetery provide a subject matter that cannot be denied. Even though the competition had been canceled, it didn’t keep me from painting this scene en plein air as I do every spring.
